Community Comes Together to Celebrate VE Day at Southlands Arts Centre

Southlands Arts Centre hosted a vibrant VE Day celebration in Uxbridge, bringing together the local community to mark the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe.

The historic Southlands House, itself a cherished symbol of Uxbridge heritage, provided a poignant backdrop for this family-friendly event. With Union Flags fluttering across its lush greenery, the setting evoked a strong sense of patriotism among attendees.

Celebrations included traditional wartime songs and was enjoyed by many

The highlight of the day was a specially organised VE Day picnic for local residents, celebrating the resilience and spirit of a generation. Families gathered on picnic mats, bundled up in blankets, and braved the wildly unpredictable British weather — which managed to deliver cold, rain, bursts of sunshine, and gusts of wind all within five hours. Yet, the elements did little to dampen the spirits.

Laughter echoed through the grounds as people enjoyed classic wartime songs like You Are My Sunshine and Run Rabbit Run, beautifully performed by two talented singers leading a heartfelt VE Day singalong.

Older residents, some in wheelchairs and accompanied by their caregivers, were seen smiling warmly as they shared stories from the 1940s. Many expressed joy at being part of such a nostalgic moment while enjoying a traditional cream tea, served with care by volunteers.

The event wasn’t just for the adults — children were kept entertained with a variety of games, fancy dress activities, and a special VE Day story-time session, helping them connect with the historical significance of the day in a fun, engaging way.

Southlands Café added to the warmth of the occasion, serving hot teas, coffees, and a selection of pies that kept everyone cosy through the brief spells of rain.

One family, wrapped in a tartan blanket and enjoying their lunch, commented: “It’s been a lovely day — the music, the atmosphere, everything’s been great. We just wish the sun had stayed out a bit longer!”

Despite the weather’s theatrics, the event stood as a touching tribute to the resilience of a generation and a powerful display of Hillingdon’s community spirit. Once again, Southlands Arts Centre proved itself a vital and vibrant heart of the local cultural and heritage landscape.
