A packed programme of events is set to unfold across Hillingdon this summer, as the borough’s council launches a seasonal schedule designed to get residents moving, reading, and rediscovering local history.
Whether you're a bookworm, history buff, or just looking for ways to keep the kids busy without losing your sanity (or your wallet), the council's offering covers indoor and outdoor pursuits throughout the borough.
Among the highlights is the Summer Reading Challenge, running until 13th September, which encourages children aged 4–11 to delve into books and the natural world with this year’s theme: ‘Story Garden – Adventures in Nature and the Great Outdoors.’ Registration is free at all Hillingdon libraries, many of which will host themed events alongside the main challenge.
Over at Cranford Park, history comes to life with the return of ‘Parkaeology’ on Friday, 19th July (12–4pm) — a hands-on event combining archaeology and local heritage. The park also hosts Family Day on Saturday, 27th July (11am–4pm), complete with a medieval tournament, games, live reenactments and community stalls.
The Battle of Britain Bunker in Uxbridge will offer its monthly Speaker Series, with a special Polish Air Force Day on Saturday, 2nd August, featuring three talks between 10am and 4pm. Family-friendly tours and toddler ‘Pipsqueaks’ reading sessions will also run throughout the season.
For those looking to burn off energy (or ice cream), Hillingdon Sports and Leisure Complex is offering family swim sessions, while Botwell Green Sports and Leisure Centre hosts soft play for under-10s. Additional outdoor options include led walks, access to 33 public tennis courts, and fitness classes delivered through ourparks.org.uk.
In a statement, Cllr Eddie Lavery, Cabinet Member for Community and Environment, said:
“We’ve curated a fantastic mix of activities to ensure residents of all ages have access to affordable, local fun this summer — whether that’s in our libraries, parks, leisure centres, or heritage sites.”
He also highlighted the Holiday Activities and Food (HAF) programme, which returns to support children receiving benefits-related free school meals.
