Hillingdon’s fight against the proposed third runway at Heathrow Airport has intensified, with local leaders emphasizing the potential catastrophic effects on the environment and residents. The air quality in the southern part of the borough, already among the worst in Europe, would deteriorate further, exacerbating existing health concerns.

A spokesperson for the community group staunchly opposing the expansion said: "A third runway would be disastrous. The destruction of approximately 1,000 homes, the displacement of countless families, and the irreversible damage to historic villages and wildlife reserves would be an intolerable cost.
Additionally, the new flight paths will exacerbate noise and pollution, impacting communities in Uxbridge, Ickenham, and Ruislip."
Echoing these sentiments, Cllr Peter Curling, leader of the Hillingdon Labour group, welcomed Mayor of London Sadiq Khan's commitment to ensuring proper scrutiny of any Heathrow expansion plans. “We are not opposed to Heathrow itself,” Curling explained. “Our goal is a Better Heathrow, not a Bigger Heathrow.”
The ruling Conservative group in Hillingdon has also voiced its opposition, reflecting a unified stance across the borough’s political spectrum. The ongoing battle looks set to continue as residents and local leaders rally against what they see as a threat to their environment and way of life.
